GEO vs SEO: what changes when AI answers the question

SEO gets your pages ranked in a list of links. GEO, or generative engine optimization, gets your business quoted and recommended inside AI answers. They overlap far more than the hype suggests. Here's what's actually different.

The short answer: GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It's SEO plus three extra jobs: being clearly described across the web, writing content AI can quote, and checking what AI tools say about you. If your SEO is weak, fix that first, because AI tools mostly read pages that already rank.

What GEO means

The term comes from a 2023 research paper from Princeton and partners, later accepted at KDD 2024, which tested ways to make content more visible in AI-generated answers. The authors reported visibility gains of up to 40%, and found that what works varies by topic. You'll also see the same idea called AEO (answer engine optimization), AI SEO or LLM optimization.

What stays the same

  • Crawling and indexing. If search engines and AI crawlers can't read your pages, nothing else matters.
  • Rankings still matter. AI search tools run web searches and read the top results. Pages that rank well get cited more often.
  • Helpful, specific content wins. Both reward pages that clearly answer a real question.
  • Trust signals. Reviews, links and mentions from respected sites help in both.

What GEO adds

1. Be described the same way everywhere

AI tools build a picture of your business from many sources. If your website says "web design agency", your LinkedIn says "digital consultant" and a directory lists an old address, the picture is blurry. Use one name, one description and one set of contact details across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Add Organization schema with sameAs links that tie them together.

2. Write answers AI can lift

  • Start each section with a direct, one- or two-sentence answer, then explain.
  • Use real numbers, dates, prices and named examples instead of vague claims.
  • Use clear headings phrased as the questions people ask.
  • Use tables for comparisons and lists for steps.
  • Cite sources for facts and statistics. The GEO paper found that adding citations, quotes and statistics tended to help.

3. Earn mentions off your own site

When someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation, it often reads directories, "best of" articles, review sites and forums. A listing on the right directory, or an honest answer on Reddit, can matter more for GEO than another blog post on your own site.

4. Measure answers, not just rankings

There's no single GEO ranking report. Test a fixed set of buyer questions each month and record who gets named and which sources are cited. The free 15-minute AI visibility test shows you how.

Where should a small business spend its time?

  1. Fix the SEO basics first: crawlable site, one page per service, clear titles, fast pages, Google and Bing indexing.
  2. Add the GEO foundations: consistent business details, Organization schema, FAQs with direct answers.
  3. Build mentions: directories, reviews and a few third-party articles in your industry.
  4. Test monthly and adjust based on what AI tools cite.

Skip anything sold as a GEO shortcut: guaranteed AI rankings, mass AI-written pages, or hidden text aimed at chatbots. They don't last and can hurt your normal rankings.

Questions people ask

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI search tools still rely on search indexes and well-ranked pages, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds work on consistent mentions, quotable content and AI-answer testing.

What does GEO stand for?

Generative engine optimization: improving how often and how accurately your business appears in answers from generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Mostly. AEO (answer engine optimization) is an older term for getting content into direct answers and featured snippets. GEO focuses on generative AI tools. In practice the work overlaps heavily.

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical and content fixes can show within weeks. New mentions and reviews usually take one to three months to show up in AI answers, because the sites that mention you need to be crawled first.
